Social Security Announces 2012 Cost of Living Adjustment

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced their 2012 Cost of Living adjustments. The main points are:

  • 3.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA).
  • An increase from $106,800 to $110,100 in the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax.

In other words, for most people receiving Social Security checks, they’ll be getting a little more in 2012. As for the taxes, if a worker earned $109,000 in 2011, and also earns $109,000 in 2012, they’ll pay tax on an extra $2,200 of earnings next year.

As the article in USA Today notes, this is the first cost of living increase since 2009.

And here is the official press release.
